LETHAL VIOLENCE AGAINST LGBTI+ PEOPLE: AN ANALYSIS OF OFFICIAL CASES FROM THE OBSERVATORY OF LGBTI+ PUBLIC POLICIES OF THE STATE OF MARANHÃO – BRAZIL BETWEEN 2020 AND 2022

UMA APRESENTAÇÃO DOS CASOS OFICIAIS DA VIOLÊNCIA LETAL CONTRA PESSOAS LGBTI+ NO ESTADO DO MARANHÃO – BRASIL

Abstract

This article aims to systematically present, with support from statistical modeling, the socio-spatial dynamics of lethal violence motivated by lesbo-homo-transphobia in the state of Maranhão between 2020 and 2022. Based on data collected and systematized by the Observatory of LGBTI+ Public Policies of Maranhão—an institution responsible for organizing and generating indicators on this phenomenon—the study seeks to understand how the colonial production of gender, as a contemporary social order, operates in the maintenance of bodily hierarchies. This order, anchored in biological determinism, grants privileged conditions of existence to cisheteronormative bodies, while LGBTI+ bodies that do not conform to dominant norms have been historically rendered vulnerable and, in various contexts, relegated to death. The results obtained through socio-spatial mapping highlight areas with higher concentrations of lethal crimes and allow for contextualization of the affected territories by considering variables such as municipality/location of the crime, victims’ profiles regarding sexuality/sexual orientation and gender identity, age group, self-declared race/color, as well as the prevailing motivation and methods used in the commission of the offenses. The research is characterized as exploratory-descriptive, based on bibliographic and documentary sources, and adopts a quali-quantitative approach that integrates statistical analysis, critical interpretation of the data, and theoretical–conceptual reflection.
